April 24 54/365 - Made for a long day

April 24 54/365 - Made for a long day

OK, apparently some people think this is me endorsing Hillary for president...I'm not doing that here. Notice that it's a MEDIA badge. I was doing my job. So please stop sending me hateful flickrmail. You can be assured that if it were Obama or McCain I'd have the same large MEDIA badge on and I'd feel the same way. It's my job.

------

No FGR for me today, I was working at the Hillary Clinton speech today. But it's a good 365 for me, because it gives me a chance to let you guys know how a day like this goes for me.

Today sucked a tad though, because my main job today was to host our pre-show live for our Web site. But we had terrible Internet connectivity until the traveling press corps arrived (see more on that below). So I didn't get to do much.

So here's how these days go:

Noon - Media dropoff time. You go in and take all your equipment in. Set up cameras and computers etc. Then they kick you out. The dropoff time is typically 4 or more hours before the start of an event. So afternoon events are nice because noon dropoffs aren't bad. It's the morning ones that suck, because you have to drop off equipment at like 4 a.m.

12:45-2 p.m. - You do nothing but wait. They have to do the bomb dog screening of all the gear you brought in earlier. So you can't be in there. Today was OK because we got to go to the student union on campus and get lunch etc. But that's not always the case. You can spend this time working the crowd trying to find stories etc.

2-3:15 p.m. - More tinkering with setup. They start letting the crowd in slowly. Everyone with the media has to go through screening first. They had an officer doing that today, so we didn't have to go through the public screens. The public trickles in as they go through the secret service check. We make sure all our setups are working, do sound checks and all that.

3:15-4 p.m.- Go live time. We do a "red-carpet" like preshow for events like this, so that was the plan for me today...problem was, Internet connection was TERRIBLE, so no preshow today. Oops.

4 p.m. - Traveling press corps arrives. There are a whole bunch of people in the crew that travels with the campaign. All the national media and some various others. When they arrive by bus, there is a bigger buzz. The traveling crew gets food provided (just Frosties and french fries today), but they bring a great wireless Internet connection with em!

4:15 p.m. - Things get started. This rarely happens on time. Sometimes an hour late, sometimes several. Last time she was here, it started three hours late. When Barack Obama was here, he started an hour late. But today, we were the first stop, so things were right on time.

Until 5:30 or so - All of the presenters speak and then Hillary gives her speech. Tends to go a little long as she gets off topic sometimes. After she finishes she takes questions from the crowd. Questions always suck. Seriously, I feel bad for the candidates sometimes. The questions all suck.

6 p.m. - 8:30 - go back to the office and pull video and then produce it and upload it quickly.

Get it done and go home...really tired after a long day.

Any questions?
